Description

Design and Build HP EliteBook 840 G6:
The design of this device was inspired by both the ultrabook and the industrial notebook family. Its body is built entirely of aluminum, giving it an excellent cool feel when it first comes into contact with a surface. As you can see from the pictures, the cover is missing the plastic strip intended for the LTE antenna

Display quality HP EliteBook 840 G6:
The HP EliteBook 840 G6 has a Full HD IPS display, model number Chi Mei CMN14E0. Its diagonal is 14 ″ (35.56 cm), and its resolution – 1920 x 1080. In addition, the screen ratio is 16: 9, pixel density – 157 ppi, pitch – 0.161 x 0.161 mm. The display can be considered Retina when viewed from at least 56 cm (from this distance, the normal human eye cannot see individual pixels).

The maximum measured brightness is 444 cd (cd/m2) at the center of the screen and averaged 417 cd (cd/m2) across the surface with a maximum deviation of 12%. The associated color temperature on a white screen and at maximum brightness is 6900K (average) – cooler than the optimal 6500K for sRGB. The average color temperature through the gray scale before profiling is also 6900 K.
In the illustration below, you can see how the screen performs from a uniformity perspective.
dE2000 values should not occur above 4.0, and this parameter is one of the first values that you should check if you intend to use the laptop for color-sensitive work (maximum tolerance of 2.0). The contrast ratio is very good – 1330: 1 (1230: 1 after stereotyping).

To make sure we’re on the same page, we’d like to give you a little introduction to the sRGB and Adobe RGB color gamut. To start, there’s the CIE 1976 uniform chromaticity chart that represents the phantom of colors visible to the human eye, giving you a better visualization of gamut coverage and color accuracy.

Inside the black triangle, you’ll see the standard color gamut (sRGB) that millions of people use in HDTV and on the web. For Adobe RGB, it is used in cameras, professional monitors, etc. for printing. The colors inside the black triangle are used by everyone and this is the essential part of the color quality and color accuracy of a mainstream laptop.

However, we have included other color spaces such as the popular DCI-P3 standard used by movie studios, as well as the UHD Rec.2020 digital standard. However, the 2020 Recommendation is still something of the future and it is difficult for today’s displays to cover that well. We’ve also included what’s called the Michael Pointer series, or Pointer gamut, which represents the colors that naturally occur around us every day.

Our “Design & Gaming” profile offers optimal color temperature (6500K) with a luminance rate of 140 cd/m2 and an sRGB gamma mode.

We tested the screen accuracy using 24 commonly used colors such as light and dark human skin, sky blue, grass green, orange, etc. You can check the results in factory condition and also using the “Design and Games” profile.

Below you can compare the HP EliteBook 840 G6‘s results with default settings (left) and with the “Gaming and Web design” profile (right).

The following figure shows how well the screen is able to reproduce dark parts of the image, which is essential when watching movies or playing games in low ambient light.

The left side of the image represents the screen with stock settings, while the right side with the “Gaming and Web Design” profile activated. On the horizontal axis, you will find the grayscale and on the vertical axis – the screen luminance. In the two graphs below, you can easily check for yourself how your monitor handles dark nuances, but keep in mind that this also depends on your current monitor settings, calibration, viewing angle, and ambient light conditions.

Response Time (Gaming Capabilities) HP EliteBook 840 G6:
We test the reaction time of pixels using the usual “black to white” and “white to black” method from 10% to 90% and vice versa.
We recorded Fall Time + Rise Time = 21 ms

Health Effect – PWM/Blue Light:
PWM (screen flicker)
Pulse width modulation (PWM) is an easy way to control screen brightness. When you turn down the brightness, the backlight intensity is not lowered, but instead is turned off and on by the electronics at a frequency that is indistinguishable to the human eye. In these light pulses, the ratio of light/no light time varies, while the brightness remains unchanged, which is harmful to your eyes. You can read more about it in our dedicated article on PWM.

The HP EliteBook 840 G6‘s display backlight uses PWM to adjust its brightness level up to 118 nits. In addition, the flash repetition rate is high enough, so that it does not have a harmful effect on your eyes in this aspect.

Blue light emissions:
Installing our Health-Guard profile not only eliminates PWM, but also reduces harmful blue light emissions while maintaining the display’s color perception accuracy. If you are not familiar with blue light, the TL version; DR is – emissions that negatively affect your eyes, skin and entire body. You can find more information about that in our dedicated article on Blue Light.

Conclusions:
The HP EliteBook 840 G6 has a Full HD IPS panel with good contrast, comfortable viewing angles, maximum brightness and wide color coverage.
